IMPORTANT NOTICE
Event Road Closure –Reel Downtown
The Downtown Development Commission (DDC) in conjunction with the Nickel Film Festival will be hosting an outdoor movie screening series called Reel Downtown. This exciting new event will take place each Monday evening in July (5, 12, 19 & 26) and will begin at 8:30 each night . The event will be located on Water Street in the Fortis parking lot at the bottom of Solomon’s Lane. Reel Downtown will feature amazing films with a local flair such as “The Bingo Robbers”, as well as never seen before “Republic of Doyle” footage. Admission is free and the event will be suitable for all age groups, just bring your own lawn chair!
In order to facilitate this event, the City of St. John’s will require the closure of Water Street to both west-bound and east-bound traffic from Prescott Street to Baird’s Cove beginning at 8:00 pm and ending at 11:00 pm each evening of the event. Customers and employees as well as event attendees may park in the Fortis parking lot on Harbour Drive as well as in any of the metered spaces throughout Downtown (which are free after 6 pm and on the weekends).
If you have any questions or concerns about this road closure, please contact the DDC office by calling 726-8244 or by emailing gaylynne@downtownstjohns.com no later than 4:30 pm on Monday, June 14, 2010.
Thank you for your cooperation and please visit our web site again soon which will have much more information about the event in the days to come.
ScotiaMcLeod, in conjunction with the Downtown Development Commission (DDC), will be hosting a business succession planning session on Tuesday, June 22 from 8:30 am to 9:30 am. This informal session will be held in the ScotiaMcLeod Boardroom (ScotiaCentre) and will focus on steps you can take to revise or begin the process of your business succession planning. These sessions have been held in the past and have proven to be very beneficial to those who attend and have been kept to an hour to take into account your busy schedules.
A business often represents a lifetime of work and vision. However, despite almost three-quarters of business owners wanting to transfer, control or exit ownership within the next decade, barely a third have a formal succession plan in place and 65% do not have a plan whatsoever. Lack of a plan is also the most common reason a family business fails to survive first-to-second generation ownership.
Leaving business succession planning to chance could allow someone to decide what happens to your business, potentially at a significant cost.
If you are interested in attending, please contact Sheila Smith (576-7465 or sheila_d_smith@scotiamcleod.com) or Chris Schwartz (576-1387 or
chris_schwartz@scotiamcleod.com).
Breakfast will be served. Limited seating available.
A public meeting will be held by the City of St. John's on June 16, 2010 to provide an opportunity for public review and comment on the application submitted by East Port Properties Ltd. to construct an office and parking building at the property located at Civic Number 351 Water Street (the former "Woolworths Store site").
The building is proposed to have a gross floor area of approximately 15,000 square metres and is proposed to be eleven (11) storeys (39.6 metres in height) as measured from Water Street. Levels P-1 through P-6 of the building will be parking areas, retail space and a restaurant on level P-2. Levels 01-06 of the building will be Class A office space. There are proposed to be approximately 465 indoor parking spaces in six (6) levels of the building. The vehicular entrance and exit points to the building will be from Harbour Drive.
The applicants have prepared a Land use Assessment Report and a Traffic Impact Assessment Report for this development project under terms of reference which were prepared by the City of St. John's. These reports provide detailed information on the project. A view plane analysis report prepared by City staff has also been prepared. These reports are available for viewing on the City's website (www.stjohns.ca) - click on "Public Notices" or "Calendar of Events for June 16, 2010". Printed copies of these reports are available from the City's Department of Planning, 3rd Floor St. John's City Hall.
