St. John's CTV Olympic Celebration Mile One Centre and the St. John's Convention Centre on Friday, Feb. 26 February 26, 2010

A free one-day festival-style event created by Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium, the St. John's CTV Olympic Celebration event will feature interactive Olympic- and Paralympic-themed sport zones, entertainment activities and large video screens showcasing CTV's live coverage of the 2010 Winter Games in addition to live performances from Joel Plaskett & The Emergency and headline act Sam Roberts Band.

The event will be held at Mile One Centre and the St. John's Convention Centre on Friday, Feb. 26.

Mile One Centre - 1 pm - 5:30 pm (Free admission)

Bring the whole family and test your skills at the Canadian Olympic Team Winter Gaming Zone, step inside a stationary bobsleigh at The Globe and Mail Front Page Photo Area, or try curling at the Suncor Energy Curling Rink. You can test your hockey skills at the RBC Olympic Ice Hockey Shootout, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Canadian Olympic Exhibition and City of St. John's booth will have activities in which you can participate.

There are plenty of prizes and other booths offering fun activities.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy live performances on the Suncor Energy Main Stage by the Monday Nights (2:40 pm and 5:00 pm) and watch live coverage of the CTV Olympic Games on the huge video screens.

Mile One Centre - 7:30 pm - midnight (Tickets required)

Enjoy live performances from Joel Plaskett & The Emergency and headline act Sam Roberts Band. (Note: Tickets are required to attend these live concert performances. Individuals who do not have a ticket for the live performances can view a live feed of the concerts at the St. John's Convention Centre). The night concludes with a live video feed of the Newfoundland & Labrador Victory Celebration Showcase in Vancouver.

St. John's Convention Centre - 1 pm - midnight (Free admission)

The convention centre is where you can hang out in the Olympic Winter Games Lounge and watch the Olympic broadcast on 6 large HD plasma TVs. At the Giant Gaming Zone participants will have the chance to play the Wii gaming system's Sonic and Mario at the Winter Olympics on the big screen.

On the main stage, visitors can also enjoy live performances by Karla Pilgrim (at 1:10 pm and 4:50 pm).

Visitors can view a live video feed of Joel Plaskett & The Emergency and headline act Sam Roberts Band from Mile One Centre as well as the Newfoundland & Labrador Victory Celebration Showcase in Vancouver highlighting some of the province?s most popular acts set for 11:00 pm.

Motorists are advised that snow removal and/or street widening operations are in effect tonight. Beginning at 12:30 am and continuing until 7:30 am, Thursday, February 11, 2010 snow will be removed or plowed on the following streets.

1. George Street
2. Adelaide Street

All vehicles must be removed from the streets noted during this time period. Any vehicles impeding the operation will be removed and impounded at the owner's expense. The impounding fee is $113.00 plus $3.00 for each day the vehicle is held in storage.

Smarth Growth Forums Monday, February 8, 2010 February 4, 2010

Smart Growth in Downtown St. John's: A public discussion on planning and development will be the topic at a meeting on Monday, February 8th at 7pm in the Foran / Greene Room at City Hall. This public meeting is a follow-up to the successful forum entitled "Urban Sprawl vs. Smart Growth," which took place in April 2009.

The event will feature Elena Patarini, an architect and urban planner who recently moved to St. John's from New York and Italy; Strat Canning, author of the City's adopted Downtown Strategy and Dave Hopley, owner of Living Planet and Johnny Ruth.

The panellists will discuss urban planning; the economic incentive to follow a municipal plan; and the current and past environment for business owners in the downtown area. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

The forum will be moderated by Keith Storey, retired professor of geography, whose primary area of expertise is social and economic impact assessments and management of large-scale resource projects.
