Icelandic Travel Company Cancels Autumn Visit to St. John's October 14, 2008

City of St. John's officials have been notified that the Icelandic tour company TREX-Vesttravel has cancelled its annual charter flight and tour to St. John's this autumn. A group of approximately 200 people were scheduled to visit the City from October 29th until November 3rd. According to Councillor Sandy Hickman, Chair of the City of St. John's Tourism Standing Committee, the company made its decision to cancel the visit due to current economic conditions in Iceland.

TREX-Vesttravel of Reykjavik, Iceland, issued a statement late last week which outlined currency fluctuations, credit card transaction delays, rationing of foreign currency, mass layoffs in the financial sector and requests from Icelandic clients asking that the flight be postponed as factors that influenced their decision to cancel the program.

TREX-Vesttravel has been bringing groups of Icelanders to St. John's annually for ten years. "While this is a tremendous disappointment to everyone involved, company officials have advised us that they hope to reschedule the charter flight for spring or early summer in 2009, assuming that the Icelandic economy is more financially stable by that time," said Councillor Hickman.
