The Constellation, a Celebrity Cruises vessel, will visit St. John's on Sunday September 23. Almost 2000 passengers will be on board, mostly North Americans. The ship arrives at 8:00 am and departs at 5:00 pm. The City is asking Downtown retailers to open their doors a little earlier on Sunday to accomodate these passengers.
Please be advised that the Grand Princess' visit to St. John's on Saturday, September 15th has been cancelled. Unfavourable weather off of Greenland is causing difficulties. Spread the word to all your Downtown neighbours. For more info please call City Tourism at 576-8106.
The Downtown Development Commission (DDC) has officially opened two new open spaces for public enjoyment in the capital city. Commission Chair Bill Mahoney, Mayor Andy Wells and John Kennedy of ACOA cut the ribbon to open the green space at New Gower and Queen Streets.
The DDC with the City of St. John's, Fortis Properties and ACOA joined to turn the underutilized space into relaxing seating areas. A second open space was opened at the corner of Prescott Street and Duckworth Street.
Businesses are advised that starting Friday, September 14, 2007 some parking meters along Duckworth Street will be taken out of service to facilitate the raising of manholes near the intersection of both Holloway Street and St. John's Lane. The effected parking lanes will be used for through traffic as construction crews will be working near the street center line.
It is anticipated that these parking stalls will be brought back into service by Monday, September 17, 2007 after the concrete used to raise the manholes has reached sufficient strength and the areas around the manholes are patched with asphalt. Please note, tack coating and paving the entire width of Duckworth Street from Prescott Street to King's Road will follow on Saturday, September 22, 2007, weather permitting.
Alternate FREE customer parking will be available for Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September 16 at the Harvey's lot off Harbour Drive, behind the former Brother T.I. Murphy Center building (permit only parking on Friday, September 14 and Monday, September 17).
The Fortis parking lot off Harbour Drive will be available as well for FREE customer parking on Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September 16.
The City of St. John's apologizes for any inconvenience this street work may cause. For more information please call the Department of Engineering at 754 CITY.
Please be advised there has been a change in the 2007 Cruise Ship Schedule. The Grand Princess will be in port on Saturday, September 15 from noon to 6:00 pm. For more information contact the DDC office at 579 4139 or City of St. John's Tourism Information at 576 8455.
