Visit of the Cruise Ship Queen Elizabeth II Saturday, September 3, 2005 August 31, 2005

The Queen Elizabeth II is scheduled to arrive on Saturday, September 3rd at 7:00 am and depart at 3:00 pm from the Foxtrap Marina in CBS. Approximately, 1, 850 passengers and 1011 crew will be on board. The ship is on a Southampton Transatlantic Cruise (20 days) visiting Foxtrap/St. John’s, Halifax, Boston, Newport, New York before sailing back to Southampton.

Passengers will embark on pre-arranged tours with Wildland Tours. A shuttle service will be in place for the passengers from Foxtrap to downtown St. John’s. This service is being provided by Cunard Cruise Lines. Pier 7 will be used as the drop off and pick-up location for the shuttles. Shuttles are scheduled to start at 9:30 am and finish at 1:30 pm. DDC and City Tourist Information Ambassadors will be on location assisting visitors upon their arrival.

It is anticipated passengers will be landing via tender boats at the Foxtrap marina by 8:00 am. Those traveling on pre-arranged tours will disembark the ship first. Followed closely by those visitors on their own itineraries. All passengers must be back on board the ship by 2:00 pm at minimum of one hour prior to departure.

Mandatory Office Paper Recycling Program August 25, 2005

In an effort to significantly reduce waste entering local landfills, the City of St. John’s, in collaboration with the provincial Department of Environment and Conservation are introducing a mandatory office paper recycling program. To support this effort, a provincial regulation is now in place prohibiting industrial, commercial and institutional organizations in the area from sending recyclable paper waste to the landfill.

The effective date of this regulation is as follows:
25 or more employees - September 1, 2005
Less than 25 employees – March 1, 2006

Who is included under this new regulation? This ban includes all businesses, public and not-for-profit institutions and other organizations who operate from a commercial premises in the City.

What are you required to do? Organizations must set up a paper recycling program that ensures all recyclable paper products are separated and diverted from the regular waste stream.

What must be recycled? Products that must be diverted under this regulation include:
White paper
Colored paper
Newspapers
Flyers
Glossy Magazines
Telephone books
Shredded paper
File folders
Catalogues
Hard and soft covered books
Envelopes
Post-It notes
Business Cards

Cruise Ship Discovery in port for two days August 16, 2005

1st Annual Cruisin' Downtown Car Show a Success August 15, 2005

Over 86 cars were on display for the 1st Annual Crusin' Downtown car show held on Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14. Several thousand spectators strolled through Queen Street and George Street to view some of the Province's best antique, classic and hot rods. The show was a part of the Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Clubs 25th Anniversary celebrations and was sponsored by the George Street Association, the Downtown Development Commission and Steele Communications. Aliant Downtown Busker Festival Starts Today! August 4, 2005

The Aliant Downtown Busker Festival starts today at noon and runs until 8:00 pm tonight. The festival takes place throughout downtown today until Sunday, August 7 at Prince Edward Plaza George Street, Murray Premises Courtyard, Scotia Center Plaza and Harbourside Park.
