The current City policy regarding snow removal in the Downtown states that removals will not be scheduled on Friday and Saturday nights in the Business Improvement Area (BIA) for fear of negatively impacting the bar and restaurant trade.
In light of the severe snowstorms and snowfall accumulations in the last number of years the Board of Management of the Downtown Development Commission (DDC) is considering changes to the current policy allowing the possibility of snow removals on any evening in the BIA including Friday and Saturday nights. This would allow all the downtown area to be generally more accessible to all members and their patrons throughout the winter season.
Prior to the request for a review and/or change of the current policy, the DDC Board of Management is seeking feedback from the DDC membership on the issue.
We ask that you indicate your support changing the current Downtown snow removal policy to allow for the possibility of snow removal within the BIA seven days a week.
As the winter season will soon be upon us, we request that your feedback be provided to the DDC by Friday, November 9, 2007.
The DDC office can be reached by calling 579 4139 or via fax at 579 1636. Via e-mail at sjddc@nf.aibn.com
To whom it may concern,
I received this snow removal update to my email address above. I appreciate the city's efforts to keep everyone apprised of its intentions. However, please note that when the email was distributed, it included everyone's email addresses in the body of the email. I am not sure if this is such great idea.

Agree that snow removal should proceed on the weekends. Overall snowremoval in the downtown is way to slow to allow for reasonable business
Posted by: Geoff Cunningham at October 26, 2007 04:35 PMYes, snow removal should take place 7 nights a week in the BIA area. Last winter, slow snow removal in the business core of the city resulted in traffic tie-ups, and long delays for east-west traffic. This ultimately turned consumers away from the downtown stores. Over the counter, and phone complaints were a common accurence last year.

This city has had far too many problems keeping the cities streets safely cleared over the last number of years. It is appreciated that this will affect bar and restaurant trade over the weekends, but let us not forget all the other commercial spaces that have had to close due to lack of access in inclement weather or the customers that have been lost just due to the conditions being unexceptable in the downtown area. Proper planning can lend to the least amount of disturbance to all the buisness's and inturn provide for greater safety, more accesability and help with the perpetual problem of parking. Snow removal seven days week is really the only way to go.

Absolutely! Clear snow whenever possible. While I appreciate concern of bar owners, there is a great vast field of downtown that is not bar turf. Start there and finish up in the higher traffic areas when it is quiet or vice versa. It was awful last year.
Posted by: Travel Resource Company at November 2, 2007 11:40 AMYou certainly have the support of the Twisted Sisters. keep the snow away from downtown, 7 days a week :) It has to have a positive effect for all businesses downtown in the long run.
Last year there were several times when snow removal happened three to four days after a snowfall- this negatively affected the walking traffic to daytime businesses in the downtown area. You most certainly have the full support of HOME on water st. to have 7-days a week snow removal this year. The quicker we can get it removed after a snowfall, the quicker ALL businesses can get back to serving their customers. Thanks!
Posted by: HOME on water st. at November 3, 2007 09:16 AMChange the policy. Remove the snow. PLEASE!
Posted by: The Cellar Restaurant at November 4, 2007 04:53 PMINDEED SNOW CLEARING SHOULD BE DONE SEVEN DAYS AWEEK...AND NOT LEFT TO PILE UP ON THE OLDEST STREET IN NORTH AMERICA! IT'S DANGEROUS FOR ALL WHO DO ATTEMPT TO "GET AROUND" DOWNTOWN!WHY PUT IT OFF!THE CONDITIONS WERE VERY POOR LAST YEAR, SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE AND THIS MAYBE THE SOLUTION!
KITCHEN QUEEN CHINA SHOP SUPPORTS THIS CHANGE!
No question! remove the snow as quickly and efficiently as possible. There were times last year the snow remained piled high on the streets and allowed one lane traffic at times let alone parking space. I say let's move forward and keep the downtown clean of snow 24/7. We need to do everything we can to encourage downtown traffic 12 months of the year.
