Mandatory Office Paper Recycling Program August 25, 2005

In an effort to significantly reduce waste entering local landfills, the City of St. John’s, in collaboration with the provincial Department of Environment and Conservation are introducing a mandatory office paper recycling program. To support this effort, a provincial regulation is now in place prohibiting industrial, commercial and institutional organizations in the area from sending recyclable paper waste to the landfill.

The effective date of this regulation is as follows:
25 or more employees - September 1, 2005
Less than 25 employees – March 1, 2006

Who is included under this new regulation? This ban includes all businesses, public and not-for-profit institutions and other organizations who operate from a commercial premises in the City.

What are you required to do? Organizations must set up a paper recycling program that ensures all recyclable paper products are separated and diverted from the regular waste stream.

What must be recycled? Products that must be diverted under this regulation include:
White paper
Colored paper
Newspapers
Flyers
Glossy Magazines
Telephone books
Shredded paper
File folders
Catalogues
Hard and soft covered books
Envelopes
Post-It notes
Business Cards
