Welcome signs in Downtown February 16, 2004

Visitors to the Downtown Business District are being greeted by colorful "Welcome" Signs. The signs, whcich have been a mainstayin downtown shop windows for the past six years took on a whole new look last year with the addition of artwork by the renowned artist, Anne Meredithe Barry.

"The purpose of the Welcome Sign Program itself is threefold," said Councillor Sandy Hickman, Chair of the City's Tourism Committee. "The signs promote St. John's as a friendly destination; they let our citizens know about conventions, cruise ships and special events happening in the city and of course they help to lure visitors into downtown businesses."

The signs feature "Falling Yellow" by the artisit Anne Meredithe Barry. The original painting was aquired by the City as part of its 2002 Art Procurement program. Councillor Shannie Duff, Chair of the City's Arts Advisory Committee said the signs "offer a new and exciting way to showcase our art and our artists to the visiting public."

Scott Cluney, Executive Director of the Downtown Development Commission said, "The Welcome Signs have been a hot commodity with our members. Store owners say they are a real boost for business."

Signs can be found in the windows of over 200 businesses in downtown St. John's.
